Identidad jacobea
Al pie de un cerro que domina las llanuras, y que se halla coronado por las ruinas de un castillo del siglo IX, se desarrolla Castrojeriz en la provincia de Burgos, comunidad de Castilla y León.
Este hermosa localidad junto al río Odra se encuentra dentro del recorrido del Camino de Santiago, el cual atraviesa de forma longitudinal convirtiéndose en la travesía más larga de la ruta jacobea que lo ha convertido en una localidad peregrina por excelencia. En la Edad Media fue la segunda población burgalesa más relevante del Camino de Santiago y contaba con varios hospitales a lo largo de esta gran vía. Realizando el Camino Francés, podrás realizar una parada en este enclave histórico.
Durante los siglos XV y XVI la exportación de lana castellana hacia los importantes telares de los Países Bajos, vivió uno de los momentos de mayor auge. Numerosos mercaderes burgaleses y castreños formaron compañías mercantiles bajo el amparo del Consulado del Mar para negociar con la lana merina en las principales plazas financieras de la época. Castrojeriz debe a este período su floreciente mecenazgo en el Camino.
Patrimonio, monumentos,…
El primer monumento que se encuentran los peregrinos al aproximarse a Castrojeriz son las ruinas del hospital general de San Antón, monasterio fundado en el año 1146 que estuvo bajo protección real.
Ya dentro de la población, entre su amplio patrimonio que atestiguan su glorioso pasado destaca el Palacio de los Condes de Castro, una construcción de estilo gótico, la Iglesia Virgen del Manzano, que comenzó a ser construido en 1214 y que actualmente alberga el museo de Arte Sacro, en donde encontramos tallas medievales, pinturas flamencas, pergaminos y piezas de orfebrería. Iglesia de San Juan. Con esbeltas naves y columnas, en el conjunto destacan el claustro del siglo XIV y un bello artesonado mudéjar. La Iglesia de Santo Domingo, principalmente de estilo gótico. Posee una bella portada de estilo plateresco español de la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. La Casa de Gutiérrez Bayona, edificada a finales del siglo XIV, una placa recuerda que en 1521 el Consejo Real de Castilla, órgano consultivo de la Corona, residió en Castrojeriz.
Es difícil resumir el pasado histórico de esta villa que se remonta a los albores de la civilización (la cerámica aparecida en excavaciones en lo alto del cerro, ponen de manifiesto que hubo un poblado en la edad del bronce, con una antigüedad de unos 1.500 años a.C.)
